Local Area

With its moto “Multum in Parvo” (much in little), Rutland is the UK’s best kept secret!  This rural escape is the perfect place to spend time enjoying the great outdoors whatever the weather.  Check out the latest Discover Rutland guide here.

Rutland Water

With England’s largest reservoir Rutland Water at its centre, the county offers a vast variety of leisure activities including sailing & other water sports, open water swimming, cycling, walking, fishing, climbing, golf and bird watching.  The best way to experience Rutland Water is to jump on board the Rutland Belle for a leisurely cruise.  Rutland Water even has its own inflatable Aqua Park, and the whole family (especially the kids) will have a great time making sand castles and swimming at the Rutland Water Beach. If you are feeling super active, then join in the Rutland Water park run which happens every Saturday morning.  Have you heard of the Rutland Osprey Project?  Rutland Water is home to the first Ospreys to breed in England for 150 years, after a translocation programme. We observe them from their arrival from Africa in spring, through to their autumn migration. Visit the Rutland Water Nature Reserve to learn more about these magnificent birds, you can even watch them via the Osprey Nest Webcam!

Rutland

Rutland’s many attractive villages, set in the wonderful English countryside, are home to picture postcard cottages and traditional country pubs.  Normanton Church, is the most famous icon of Rutland Water.  Saved from the water and open to the public on selected dates it has become a sought after venue for romantic weddings, special occasions and concerts. If stately homes are your thing, then you are spoilt for choice with Burghley House and Rockingham Castle both nearby, and other Hidden England properties in close proximity.

For a great day family day out, why not give the Twinlakes family theme and water park at Melton Mowbray a try?  100 acres of family theme, farm & water park only 11 miles from our hotel.  Ride their new rollercoaster the "Rum Runner", splash in the half acre of water park and meet the Twinlakes famous meerkats: Lilly, Mr Darcy and their babies Eenie, Meenie, Miny and Stumpy Mo! in the Red Rooster Zoo Farm.

Oakham

The historic market town of Oakham, dating back to the 1100’s, is the largest town in Rutland.  Oakham offers diverse retail and shopping opportunities and the location of the hotel at the top of the High Street is ideal for accessing all that the town has to offer.  Enjoy visiting the twice weekly market on Wednesday and Saturday, where you will find the finest local produce from meats and pies, to local cheeses, artisan bread and fresh free-range eggs.  On the 3rd Saturday of each month we also have our traditional Farmers' Market in Gaol Street.  Local sights include Britain’s finest example of Norman architecture, Oakham Castle, whose banqueting hall is the oldest surviving English Castle Hall, and Rutland County Museum (which is next door to the hotel).

Rutland Farm Park is also a stone’s throw from the hotel and is home to a variety of animals from alpacas to rabbits, it also offers a children’s play area, petting area and brand new tea room.

Whilst visiting, we recommend you check out the local brewer, Oakham’s very own Grainstore Brewery.  Located near Oakham Rail Station, the Grainstore brews craft real ale on site and offers brewery tours. Click here for more information on the brewery tours.
